Overview

Navisworks is a very good at managing BIM projects. You can combine architectural, structural, MEP, infrastructure models in Navisworks and understand the project’s team plan by exploring fast and light model.

This course was design for everyone who wants to use BIM models more efficiently. If you want to know how to check models for clashes and find mistakes, make beautiful and useful animations, calculate items and materials this course is for you.  We will teach you from the very beginning, so you need no experience in Navisworks. This course will help you to get professional skills in Navisworks. Experienced users can check their knowledge and get answers for some specific issues.

Navisworks Professional Training

How to learn by this course.

First, download the  Materials

Second, read the introduction for every chapter of the course before watching videos. There we will guide to   the materials for the current chapter.

Thirdly, watch the videos in order and practice with us.

Open model

In this chapter, you will need materials from folders number 1,2,3.

In this part, you will know how to add model to Navisworks and find out the difference between three Navisworks file formats.

As result of this part will be the assembly of Office Building in NWF format. You will use it in the next lessons.

Interface

This is a short but useful review of Navisworks interface. In this video, you will find out mainNavisworksabilities and tools.

Model opening. Navisworks cache

It is possible to merge files from different formats in Navisworks’s model. But first you should understand the

difference between Navisworks’s own files. There are three types of them. In this video, you will learn how to work with

Navisworks

cache file.

Autodesk Navisworks, Navisworks cache, video lesson, file format, BIM

Navisworks file

There is no way to make objects in Navisworks’s files. But you can make reviews, clash reports, animations and much

more.

To store all your work there is a Navisworks file (NWF). This file doesn’t contain model’s elements. It has only link to NWC file

and the results of your work.

Autodesk Navisworks, Navisworks file, video lesson, file format, save viewpoint, BIM

Link to Revit file

An NWF file has link to native (rvt) model. When you add the wall in Revit model you only need to refresh an NWF file

and

then the wall appears in an NWF file. But there are two conditions to provide this option, you will find them in this video.

Autodesk Navisworks, Navisworks file, video lesson, file format, link to Revit, BIM

Navisworks NWD file

When you need to email model to the client or to get BIM archive the NWD file is your choice. There are geometry and

results of your work in this file but there is no connection to Revit file. You will find two ways of getting this file in this

video.

Clashing moved objects

It is possible to test your model with moved items. For example, you found a clash between pipe and wall and you moved a pipe or all items in plumbing system to get rid of the intersection. Then you can check are there any new conflicts in model with moved pipes. In this video, you will try this technique.

Manage clashes

It is possible get clash report and assign somebody to responsible for it. You can set clash report and export it or save as a list of viewpoints. In this video, you will these options and another technique require to managing clashes.

Quantity take-off (QTO)

In this chapter, you will need materials from folder number 8.

In this part, you will know how to calculate items and resources in Navisworks.

Quantification

It is possible to calculate items and materials (resources) in the Quantification in Navisworks. First you should create Quantification project second you should set up item and resource catalogs and then take off elements from model to item catalog. In this video, you will know how it works.

Selecting elements by GUID

It is possible to take off only elements which have GUID in properties. In this video, you will find out what GUID is and how to take elements off.

Project setup

In this video, you will learn how to start up Quantification project in Navisworks.

Item catalogue

It is possible to make new item catalog from scratch or to load one by default. In this video, you will learn how work with item catalog.

Take off elements. Map rules

It is possible to get area, volume, perimeter in Quantification workbook from elements properties (when model comes from Revit). But if you want to have mass values of element (from user parameter in Revit) in “Weight” column in quantification workbook you should know how to map it.  In this video, you will learn this workflow.

Take off elements. Global rules

It is possible to make mapping rules not only for every element but you can add one rule to all elements in item catalog.  In this video, you will learn this workflow.

Resource catalog

It is possible create resources like desk, concrete, water, sand, finishing materials and the add resources to the items in Item catalog. For example, you can get area of desk for floors without modelling desk.  In this video, you will learn this workflow.

Appearance

It is possible to color take off elements in the Navisworks scene. And you can edit colors in Item catalog.

Markups

It is possible take off only 3d elements. You can work with drawings and take rooms off and another part of sheet.

Set your workspace

In this chapter, you will need materials from folder number 12.
In this part, you will know how to customize your workspace in Navisworks.

File options

There are a lot of file options for Navisworks files. For example, you can turn off objects smaller than 1000 pixels in scene or change the top direction of the scene.
